The Arts Initiative
was established in 2006 by UCLA’s School of the Arts and Architecture, School of Theatre, Film and Television, and the Humanities Division of the College of Letters and, with annual support provided by the Provost. While its thematic foci changes from year to year, the fundamental purpose of the fund has not changed: to foster the advancement of the arts and arts-related scholarship at UCLA, primarily through funding worthy projects led by ladder faculty from the three units.
In the past, the fund was administered by three Deans (SOAA, TFT, Humanities), advised by faculty committees drawn from across these units. With the creation of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, the number of campus units served by this fund has grown to four. Moreover, in light of 2017-18’s pool of strong applications and in honor of the UCLA Centennial, the Provost, Deans, and the Vice Chancellor for Research have pooled resources to substantially increase the initiative’s annual budget from $50,000 to $100,000, to be administered by all four deans, advised by a faculty committee drawn from all four units.
